Processed meat increases risk of heart disease

hotdogAs a elementary student I remember those Friday’s that were hot dog day. I always dreaded them because I was of those minority of kids that hated hot dogs. So I would say no meat just chili and onions. Of course I got it on wonderful nutritious white bun, yeah right. After reading the article below now I know why I didn’t get the hotdog.

Red meat is not a danger to your health, but processed meat is, a new study has concluded. People who regularly eat processed meats such as bacon, sausage or processed meats from the deli counter had a far higher risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes, say researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health. However, people who often eat red meat that’s not been processed – such as cuts of beef, pork or lamb – weren’t endangering their health. The researchers found that eating 50 grams of processed meat every day – which equates to one or two slices of processed meat from the deli, or one hot dog – led to a 42 per cent increased risk of heart disease, and a 19 per cent increased risk for diabetes. Processed meats contain dietary sodium, which is known to increase blood pressure. The Harvard researchers advise people to either avoid processed meats completely, or at least reduce your intake to just one portion a week.
