What is so Bad About Splenda?

Artificial Sweeteners have been around for some time. Saccharin then Nutrasweet aka Aspartame and now the new kid on the block is Splenda. Certainly that has to be okay because it comes from sugar. Right?

splenda-aspartame-artifical sweetenersThe Splenda tagline says ” Life is sweet – and SPLENDA® Products make it even sweeter, by giving you a delicious alternative to sugar that can help you lead a healthy lifestyle”

New Research Shows that you really cannot fool Mother Nature. Splenda is often used for people who want to reduce their calories . However, research suggests that that Splenda and other artificial sweeteners  may actually confuse the body’s response to sweet tastes and contribute to weight gain.

WHAT EXACTLY IS SPLENDA or sucralose is a sugar with a changed chemical structure.  The chemical structure of the natural sugar is changed by adding chlorine. When this happens a chloracarbon is created.  This causes it to pass through the body largely unabsorbed, which means that it doesn’t add calories.

Do you remember other franken foods were created like the artificial fat product called Olestra that found its way into potato chips and other food products. I don’t think it is even around today. I guess too many people got diarrhea from it.

What happens when you ingest Splenda it then by  passes the intestines and as a result you reduce the important friendly bacteria as much as 50 % in your “gut”, increase the pH level in the intestines, increase body weight, and you can inactivate certain drugs through the alteration of glycoprotein levels.”

If that is not bad enough Splenda and  certain Pesticides have something in common. Organo-chorine pesticides such as DDT and Splenda have similar molecular structure.

While most of the Splenda is not absorbed , the 15% that is abosorbed may cause a problem.According to James Bowen M.D., in an article titled The Lethal Science of Splenda, a Poisonous Chlorocarbon,

“Any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body intact can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and, eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ which deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes, the liver’s metabolic cells, and destroy them.

When Splenda was tested in animals it produced swollen livers just like chlorocarbon poisons. It also calcified the kidneys of these test animals.

The brain and nervous system are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these chemicals. Their high solvency attacks the human nervous system and many other body systems including genetics and the immune function.

Chlorocarbon poisoning can also cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known deadly chlorocarbons.

Just like aspartame, which achieved marketplace approval by the Food and Drug Administration when animal studies clearly demonstrated its toxicity, sucralose also failed in clinical trials with animals.

Aspartame created brain tumors in rats. Sucralose has been found to shrink thymus glands (the biological seat of immunity) and produce liver inflammation in rats and mice.”

Why Not Have Some Real Sugar!

While I have also had an intense dislike for artificial sweeteners many have become addicted to the intensely sweet taste of artificial sweeteners.

Don’t you think this is a good time to kick the habit? If you have a yearning for something sweet, just use real sugar. When you stop using artificial sweeteners and start to use eat better nutritional foods you will be surprised that it really doesn’t take that much to sweeten up food and drink.

A little bit can be satisfying because it will hit the pleasure centers of the brain, which the artificial sweeteners can not do.

Other sweeteners that might be used in place of sugar would be Stevia, Xylitol and honey sparingly. Some recommend Agave used from cactus. Many Agave products add corn syrup but I understand that Blue Volcanic Agave is the purist.

And even better, have some fresh fruit, which comes packaged with nutrition and fiber. You will be surprised that when your body gets the nutrients it needs you will not longer have the cravings you once had.

I use SweetLeaf Sweetener stevia and have noticed that I don’t have much desire for sweets anymore–which is a big deal for me! I’ve learned that stevia also contains nutrients that help satisfy the sweet tooth! Woowhoo! (of course, SweetLeaf is the most natural)

Hi Yoda, I agree with you. Stevia and other natural sweeteners are a much better choice than artificial sweeteners like aspartame or Splenda. However, there are just a few people that do have problems to stevia and get headaches albeit the minority.

Have you tried lots of other brands besides SweetLeaf? There are also some positive comments about NuNaturals Stevia products.

While I have not tried this one yet, there is another natural alternative sweetener on the market by the name of Just Like Sugar. The ingredients in this product are chicory root, calcium, vitamin c, and natural flavors such as orange peel. You can go to the website and even request a sample.
    Stay Healthy, Caroline
