A Natural Mosquito Repellent that Really Works

natural-mosquito-sprayI know here is on the gulf coast mosquitoes can be down right annoying.. but it seems that mosquitos live most any where. This time of year all these pests have me looking for a mosquito spray…well natural mosquito spray at least.

While we were at to the farmer’s market last Saturday, someone was selling a natural mosquito spray made with lavender oil.  I tried it in hopes it would be a good natural mosquito spray.

Unfortunately I was disappointed in the results.  I probably would give it a C if I had to give it a grade. We found that it doesn’t keep all the mosquitoes away.

As I continued my quest for a  Natural Mosquito spray that works, I came across this recipe on a survival blog. The poster said it would work and even keep fleas away from your pets.

They posted this convincing picture…showing the hand with the spray showed no mosquitos while the untreated hand was a mosquito landing zone.

This product also works well on ants and fleas and is free from chemicals that poison the body.

You will need to plan ahead since the cloves have to be soaked for 4 days …

  Ingredients:

  •  1/2 litre of alcohol  (this is approximately  17 oz)
  •   100 gram of whole cloves or approximately 3.5oz
  •  100 ml of baby oil or similar (almond, sesame, chamomile, lavender, fennel etc) 3.4 oz

 Preparation:

Leave cloves to marinate in alcohol four days. Stir every morning and evening and after 4 days add the oil. It is now ready to use.

 How to use:

Gently rub a few drops into the skin of the arms and legs. Observe the mosquitoes fleeing the room. This is excellent to repels fleas on pets too.

Another product that helps prevent Mosquitos from Biting

I have used with success for mosquitos is Shaklee Basic H.   Either apply it directly to the skin (do NOT get it in the eyes) or cut it half-and-half with water. As above, it will act as a repellant. And when you come inside, it will wash right off. It’s also useful as full-strength on any insect bite to reduce itching.

One Dog Lover said about Basic Htoddler_hugging_dog1

“We have mosquitos in Michigan too and I use the basic H on my dogs to keep the flies and mosquitos away. She used to run away from me when she would see me coming with the commercial stuff, but when I go out with “her spray bottle” she will come right up and wait to be sprayed.”

Fleas and Ticks: Apply 1 cap full of Basic-H or squirt full-strength to affected area on pet with fleas then shampoo; Basic-H drowns fleas and stops itching. Lather up hair and wait 5 to 10 minutes (suds will be low), then rinse off. Flea dip and shampoo all in one. One owner reported that the chemical combinations left her dog rolling in the yard trying to get them off her fur, but would come running to get treated after experiencing Basic H.
